My favorite Calvin and Hobbes strips

image

Calvin just looks so very pitiful at the end of this strip...it almost makes want to burst into tears.

image

I think this one is descriptive of the trouble the pair gets into and how well his mum knows him.

image

My mother was just like Calvin's dad when I was a child...always telling me crazy things and then I'd go off telling other people what I'd "learned" from Mum.

image

He's just a little troublemaker; you've got to love him.

image

What I love about Watterson's work is that he is so expressive, the characters nearly jump off the page. I can almost hear his mum's laughter.

image

(Sigh) So very true...

image

This one is so cute. I love how his parents knew one of the best presents they could have given him.

I also love how Calvin manages new and inventive ways to irritate everyone in his path.

One of my happiest childhood memories was looking through the newspaper to see what new horrific snowmen designs Calvin had come up with each day.

...and this one has always been one of my all-time favorites of the snowmen follies.

I really love the way Calvin's mind works.

These make me laugh out loud every single time I see them.

The Sunday Pages

image

This one is so colorful and I love the little message it conveys.

image

You have to admit that Calvin is a brilliant artist

image

I remember reading the series as a child, but this is the only one I have remembered through the years.

image

I simply love the message conveyed here, too.

image

I can't help, but laugh out loud at the subject matter and his parents' reactions at the end.

image

Again, the way Watterson conveys his work; you can hear the honking of the car horns and Calvin's laughter.

image

All I can think of is his poor mum's struggles.

image

There's just so much fun and life in this one. It makes me slightly nostalgic for my own childhood.

image

Everyone has days like these.

image

This is (I believe) a strip in Yukon Ho!, the very first Calvin and Hobbes book I owned and this one still has me tears as much now as it did then.

image

In the Tenth Anniversary book, Watterson says that the strip layout confinements ruined his idea for this strip and I can really see what he meant. However, given what he had to work with, it still turned out spectacular.

image

Like I said earlier, Calvin's dad is much like my mum was when I was a kid and she pulled this same kind of stunt on me several times.

image

Watterson can say so much without words and I love how this is drawn and what it says about life.

image

Although I've never been an overwhelming fan of the Spaceman Spiff stories, I love the colors in this one and I adore the use of the word "Zounds" and looking into Calvin's world.

image

I always love the little silly ones like this one. I would play games like this as a kid.

image

Again, Watterson has a way of speaking without words and you can almost hear Calvin screaming into the night.

image

I've always loved the idea of being on the toboggan during one of those momentous crashes. This strip comically gives the reader that chance.

image

I love the strips that demonstrate the human psyche.

image

Hahahaha! I love Watterson's methods for storytelling and Calvin's mum's scream at the end.

image

This one is so vibrant I adore it when we can see how Calvin thinks his mind works.

image

I find this one comical from beginning to end.

image

I love how Calvin's idea of play includes so much destruction.

image

This is so cute! I wish I had a friend like that!

One of my all-time favorites, not just because of the landscape and use of color, but who hasn't wanted to do the same from time to time?
